Lightning High School Hockey Club
Lightning Hockey Club was established in 2024. It originated as Lake Park Hockey Club which was established in 1973.
It began when former LP teacher Mr. Bill Burke was asked to be a sponsor/coach for the team. Although Mr. Burke had no hockey experience, he optimistically accepted the role.
After a rough start, Coach Burke enlisted Bill Murphy for coaching assistance, a choice that would begin a legacy. Coach Murphy developed a team that achieved multiple West Suburban HS Hockey League titles as well as a Kaiser Cup victory in 1977.
Back then, Lake Park hockey games rivaled football games in popularity. Lines of fans waited outside the doors just to get a $3 seat. “The crime in the Roselle-Bloomingdale area dropped because everyone was watching LP hockey games,” according to Coach Burke.
The present day Lightning Hockey Club combines players from Bartlett, Dundee Crown, Lake Park and South Elgin high schools. Varsity and JV teams compete in the IHSHL North Central League, the largest high school league in Illinois.
